Eastern Hog-nosed Snake Heterodon platirhinos. Uncommon to rare in many places where formerly common. Statewide in distribution. Often called “spreading adder,' this familiar snake is apparently declining for unknown reasons.

A Plains Hog-nosed Snake was collected in 1946 from La Crosse County. This species occurs in northwestern and west-central Illinois, and just across the Mississippi River from La Crosse in Minnesota, ...
