Montanucci presented evidence in 2004 that the group of horned lizards formerly known as Phrynosoma coronatum (Coast Horned Lizard) comprised four separate species.

Horned lizards are unusual in that they are myrmecophagous - ant eaters - with blunt, noncuspid, peglike teeth for crushing prey. The diet of Phrynosoma taurus is 61% harvester ants, with the remainder comprised of other arthropods.

The Coast Horned Lizard is relatively large and less rounded than other horned lizards. An individual's snout-vent length can reach 4 inches.

The short-horned lizard is yellowish or reddish-brown, with two rows of large dark spots down its back. It’s a small lizard with a fringe of tiny horns around its sides. It’s most active during the day and burrows into the soil at night.

The Texas Horned Lizard or Horned Toad, Phrynosoma cornutum, a native of the Midwest, is found in dry habitats. It has a round, flat, spiny body, 4" long. It is light brown with dark brown blotches.

Horned lizards carry with them a wide variety of means to avoid predation. Their coloration generally serves as camouflage. When threatened, a horned lizard's first defense is to remain still and hope it avoids detection.
