The Horned Puffin looks very much like the Atlantic species of puffin, but it has a ridge of hardened skin that rises above its eyes in a thin vertical line towards the top of its head.

The Horned Puffin (Fratercula corniculata) breeds along the coast of Alaska and winters southward on the Pacific coast to Washington and Oregon.

Horned Puffins weigh about 1.4 pounds (620 grams), and measure about 15 inches in length, with a wingspan of 23 inches.

Horned puffins exhibit a types of deceptive coloration called counter shading. Animals with countershading have different colors on their backs and stomachs.

Horned Puffin: Medium-sized puffin with black upperparts and white underparts. Face is white with a black, fleshy horn above eye extending to top of head. Bill is triangular and massive during summer, when it is bright yellow with orange tip.

Horned Puffin

This colorful little seabird can be found in the cold waters of the northern Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea. Puffins are closely connected to the sea. They spend 6-8 months each year on the open ocean.

Tufted and Horned Puffins were seen on this trip and some were very close to the boat.
