Popularly called 'horned toads' due to their squat appearance, these unusual members of the iguana family occupy a special ecological niche.

They are the only species of horned toads that give birth to the young live. Other species of horned lizards lay eggs.

The Texas Horned Lizard or Horned Toad, Phrynosoma cornutum, a native of the Midwest, is found in dry habitats. It has a round, flat, spiny body, 4" long. It is light brown with dark brown blotches.

Handling is not highly recommended, though any person with experience handling horned toads (Ceratophrys species) and their relatives, would not have as much trouble.

This species is also known--erroneously--as a Horny Toad or Horned Toad.
Habitats
This is a species of desert habitats. Dry, exposed, sandy areas provide suitable living conditions.

Phrynosoma, with about a dozen species, the "horned toads" of California to Texas, and through Mexico. Some of these comicallooking little creatures are viviparous, others deposit their eggs in the ground.
