The housefly (also house fly or house-fly), Musca domestica, is the most common fly occurring in homes, the most familiar of all flies and indeed one of the most widely distributed animals; it is a pest that can carry and transmit serious diseases.

The diet of flies varies heavily between species. The horse fly eats bits of flesh torn off of its prey, mosquitoes feed on blood and nectar, and the house fly eats a semi-digested liquid created by mixing-enzyme rich saliva with its food.

There are some 120,000 species known, including the most common 'pet': the Common House Fly. Many more species still fly about undiscovered. Some experts believe that there may be well over 1 million species.
