Family - TROGLODYTIDAE
The House Wren's scientific name calls it a "troglodyte", which means "one who lives in caves". Why is this little brown bird like a caveman?

The House Wren (Troglodytes aedon) nests across much of the United States and Canada. The birds in the first two images were wintering in Kenedy Co., Texas, in January, 2000.

Both male and female often destroy eggs of other House Wrens and of other species nesting nearby; this behavior is inhibited while birds are tending their own eggs. Carolina Wrens, House Sparrows, and European Starlings compete for nest holes.

Status Rare vagrant, very rare in summer. Since the first edition of this book (1961), when only six records had occurred since 1932, over 150 House Wrens have been reported in the province.

What is your favorite bird? Silly question really, but birding along Mines Road today we stopped first at Murietta's Well, and at the bridge we were serenaded by this House Wren (Troglodytes aedon).

House Wren Troglodytes aedon. Breeder. Common in winter, spring, and fall in Gulf Coast region. In Inland Coastal Plain, fairly common in fall, uncommon in winter and spring.

At times house wrens interfere with the nesting success of other birds by puncturing their eggs. But unlike the sparrow and starling, these birds are part of the natural system. They are protected by law. Don't intervene.

In southern Michigan 23 percent of nest box failures was due to house wrens (Troglodytes aedon) puncturing eggs or removing them; 18.8 percent was due to raccoons (Procyon lotor) or other mammals, and 14 percent to weather [45].

Confusing similar species includes the House Wren and (during the winter) the Winter Wren. The House Wren is smaller (11-13 cm) and lacks the distinct white eyebrow stripe.

The most common is the house wren, is 5 in. It readily accepts nest boxes,
even close to houses, and due to it's aggressive nature will drive
other birds from nest boxes.
The cactus wren is the largest North American wren.

Most wrens nest in natural holes and cavities; house wrens, which range over most of the United States and S Canada, will nest in boxes built for them and in crannies about dwellings. Also found in North America are the cactus, rock, and marsh wrens.
