The Howler Monkey is the loudest monkey and the loudest land animal. The only animal that is louder than the Howler Monkey is the Blue Whale. The Howler's call can be heard up to three miles (4.8 km) away.

The Black Howler Monkey (Alouatta caraya) is a species of howler monkey, a large New World monkey, from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay, being the southernmost member of the Alouatta genus.

Howler monkeys are the largest New World monkeys. They howl extremely loudly to advertise their presence in their territory.

Howler monkeys produce bouts of loud roaring at dawn. This is to mark the home range of each troop and to warn off any invaders from another troop.

Howler monkeys are highly territorial, marking their area by howling at rival clans, but seldom fighting with other clans. Adult females outnumber males by two or three to one.
