Garrido's hutia is found on small islands. It occurs in the Greater Antillean Moist Forests Global 200 Ecoregion. Garrido's hutia had previously only been found on Cayos Maja off of south-central Cuba, where 1 animal was collected around 1970.

The hutia (Capromys pilorides) is nearly as large, arboreal in habits, and a native of Cuba, where it is the largest indigenous mammal.
