Hyacinth macaws have extremely strong beaks designed for cracking the shells of very hard nuts. In the wild these birds feed primarily on a variety of palm nuts but their diet also includes fruit and other vegetable matter.

DIET:
Most macaws feed mainly on seeds, nuts, and fruits. With their powerful, vice-like bills, some macaws are even able to crack open hard-shelled foods such as Brazil nuts.

The Hyacinth macaw is one of the largest macaws, measuring up to 40 inches. It is a lovely uniform cobalt blue with only a narrow strip of bare orange-yellow skin at the base of the lower bill.

The Hyacinth Macaw is the largest species of parrot in the world, growing to more than a meter in height and native to the jungles of central and eastern South America.

It is a distinctive bird with a large crest and has one of the largest bills of any parrots (only the Hyacinth Macaw's is larger). This powerful bill enables Palm Cockatoos to eat very hard nuts and seeds that other species have difficulty accessing.

Extant species range in size from the Buff-faced Pygmy-parrot, under 10 g (0.35 oz.) and 8 cm (3.2 inches), to the Hyacinth Macaw, at 1 meter (3.3 feet) in length, and the Kakapo, at 4 kg (8.8 lbs).

Currently there are 17 species of macaw. The largest is the Hyacinth macaw which is 3 feet in length from head to tip of tail. The smallest is the Red-shouldered macaw, measuring 12 inches in length.

Some of the larger psittacine species like hyacinth macaws and sulphur-crested cockatoos have thin egg shells, as do the albatrosses. Chickens and ducks, on the other hand, tend to have very thick egg shells.
