Hyaenas
Spotted Hyaena: Crocuta crocuta
Description: Short, dirty yellow to reddish coat. Irregular dark brown spots. Short erectile mane.
Habitat: Grassland and flat open terrain ...

Hyaenas are medium to large in size, 10-80 kg. They have a bushy tail, rounded ears, and three of the four species have stripes or spots on their coats (the brown hyaena, Parahyaena, is unmarked). A mane may be present.

Brown hyaenas are smaller than spotted hyaenas at around 40kg when adult. There is little difference in size between the male and female. The average shoulder height is 75cm.

Brown hyaenas are predominantly active at night when clan members split up to hunt and scavenge alone. They take refuge during daytime under thicket, in underground holes, in tall grass patches, under debris or between large rocks.

Spotted hyaenas weigh up to 70kg, but average between 45-55kg with the females being slightly larger than the males. Their shoulder height measures between 80 and 90 cm. Their coats are sandy or greyish brown and short with a spotted pattern.
