Hyena
Related Category: Vertebrate Zoology
(h-´n), carnivorous, chiefly nocturnal mammal of the Old World family Hyaenidae.

Hyena Old world nocturnal mammal. Its front legs are longer than the hind ones. Hyenas feed mostly on carrion and it can crush bones with its strong jaws. It lives in ranges over most of Africa, Iran, India, Asia minor.

Hyenas also communicate by body posture and by scent marking. Anal glands secrete substances which the animals deposit on grass stalks.
DIET: ...

Hyenas make a variety of vocalizations, including wailing calls, howling screams and the well-known "laughter" used to alert other clan members up to three miles away of a food source.

The hyena is a meat-eater that lives in Africa, south of the Sahara Desert, and in parts of the Middle East and Asia. Hyenas live in a variety of habitats, including savannas, dry plains, and brush.

Hyenas in general
The Hyaena Specialist Group is part of the World Conservation Union. Its members are volunteers, and biologists who work on various research and conservation projects for hyenas -- hyena authorities and advocates, one might say.

Spotted Hyena
The Hyaenidae family contains four species. Three of these species, the hyenas, hunt and scavenge large vertebrates. The fourth species, the aardwolf, subsists on termites.

Hyenas are omnivores that hunt and scavenge. Hyenas are well-known for their powerful jaws, sharp teeth and bone crushing abilities. With a pressure of 800 kg, a hyena's jaws are more powerful than a lion's or a tiger's.

Hyenas, like several other African carnivores, are important for the health of hoofed animal populations by weeding out the weak and sick as prey items. Their predation helps to keep the balance between these herds and their food resources.

Hyenas are important because they ensure that only the strong grazing animals in the sahara live to produce their offspring. They often eat the sick or weakest prey as they are the easiest to get at.

Hyenas are found all over the African savannah south of the Sahara, although they are becoming rare in South Africa. Their yellowish coats are dotted with brown. They usually spend the day in their rocky, underground dens, emerging to hunt at night.

Hyenas not only prey on almost any kind of live animal they can catch -- large and small -- but also eat carrion (dead animals), bones, eggs, and even animal droppings. Their powerful jaws enable them to crush even large animal bones.

While hyenas are known as scavengers, they also possess great intelligence and skill on the hunt.

Its main enemies are the lion, leopard, hyena and baboon.

Diet
The Cheetah preys mainly on small gazelles and antelope, hares, and ground birds; Thompson's gazelle being their food of choice.

Cheetahs, unlike lions or hyenas, prefer to hunt during the day. When hunting, cheetahs will attempt to stalk their prey and get as close as possible to the animal before attacking.

Tropical grassland animals (which do not all occur in the same area) include giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, kangaroos, mice, moles, gophers, ground squirrels, snakes, worms, termites, beetles, lions, leopards, hyenas, and elephants.

Potential predators of the mountain nyala include leopard (Panthera pardus), spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta), and lion (Panthera leo), although the latter two are rarely found at the altitudes frequented by T. buxtoni (Brown, 1969b).

Many European settlers drew direct comparisons with the Hyena, due to its unusual stance and general demeanour.

Certain aspects of cheetah behavior can be explained as adaptations to compete with other sympatric large predators, particularly lions and hyenas. Cheetahs are predominantly diurnal, probably because competing predators are nocturnal.

The Aardwolf is about the size of a small jackal and resembles a hyena in over all shape. It's yellow-brown to dull yellow, long and coarse fur, has distinct vertical black stripes on the flanks and some on the legs.

Hyenas and jackals can also spread these sicknesses. The consequences of a rabies outbreak can be severe: In 1991, it was responsible for the disappearance of wild dogs from Africa's famed Serengeti Plain.

Although giraffes are peaceful animals, they will defend themselves from lions, leopards and hyenas which attack the young, and sometimes adult giraffes. Giraffes give powerful kicks with all four legs, and a well placed kick can kill a lion.

The bird's cry is a discordant, abrupt laugh, said to be even more startling than the hyena's (especially heard early in the morning). As a rule, the kookaburra does not catch fish, feeding instead on crabs, large insects, mice, rats and reptiles.

Abandoned aardvark burrows are highly sought after by many other animals ranging from porcupines to hyenas who use them for shelter.

The African wild dog is not in competition with hyenas and jackals for food because they are not scavengers. They prey on medium sized gazelles and antelopes and are not in competition with lions for larger prey. Their only predators are humans.

Others live in packs of various sizes, which may be dominated by males (as in lions and seals) or by females (as in hyenas).

Main predators: cheetah, lion, wild dog, leopard, hyena, python - Long-hunted for use as food - Habitat modifications have adversely affected populations.

Usually solitary but males have been observed remaining with females after mating and even assisting with rearing of the young.

They act as scavengers, just as vultures, hyenas and jackals do on land, keeping the rivers and lakes clear of carrion (dead animals). They also eat large quantities of predatory fish, so helping to preserve suitable fish for humans.

Here it is safely stored beyond the reach of scavengers such as hyenas and jackals. After eating, the leopard usually visits a water hole to drink.

Cheetahs are endangered, primarily due to loss of habitat. Inability to compete with other carnivores, such as lions and hyenas, is another reason. In earlier years, the fur trade was a major problem.

South African fur seals are preyed on by sharks and orca (killer whales). Pups on the mainland are also taken by the black-backed jackal and brown hyena. In Australia, the main predators are great white sharks and orca.

Occasionally, lions will hunt young elephants, rhinoceros or hippopotamus. Lions also scavenge food, chasing away hyenas and other carnivores from their kills.

As solitary creatures, both male and female rhinos establish territories. Males mark and defend their territories. Rhinos use their horns not only in battles for territory or females but also to defend themselves from lions, tigers and hyenas.

If the disturbance continues, they stamp their feet, whirr quills and charge the enemy, back end first, attempting to stab with the thicker, shorter quills Such attacks have been known to kill lions, leopard, hyenas and humans.

Animals in this order include: dog family, cat family, bears, raccoons, sea lions, seals, walruses, weasels, skunks, otters, badgers, civets, mongooses and hyenas. There are over 260 mammals in this order.

In contrast, there is just one canid, one monkey, and one antelope. I do include three bears, one seal, one hyena, one pig, and five cetaceans, plus such absolutely unique mammals as Aardvark, pangolins, colugos, a monotreme, and three marsupials.

They feed on acacia, bush leaves and grasses, and may stand on their hind legs to reach higher foliage. Dama gazelles are preyed upon by cheetahs, Cape hunting dogs, lions, leopards, hyenas and jackals (2) (13).

The incubation period is 35 to 45 days. Typically, the male defends the hatchlings and teaches them to feed. The survival rate is low for the eggs, with an average of one per nest surviving. Predators are hyenas, jackals, and vultures.
