(´bs), common name for wading birds with long, slender, decurved bills, found in the warmer regions of both hemispheres. The body is usually about 2 ft (61 cm) long. Most ibises nest in colonies.

Several ibis species inhabit wet portions of the African savanna. The Hadada Ibises especially like wooded streams.

The White Ibis as an adult is a distince bird. Snowy white, long pink decurved bill and facial skin (redder during the breeding season). In flight the wings have black tips.

The Green Ibis is distributed from Costa Rica through to the Orinoco and Amazon Basins and has been seen (rarely) as far south as Rio Grande do Sul.

Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus)
Length: about 19".
Photographed on May 23, 2005, along the refuge's Wildlife Loop (map) at the Snow Goose Pool. The glossy ibis is common in spring and fall and abundant in winter.

The White Ibis (Eudocimus albus) is a resident of marshes, swamps, lakes and wetlands in the Americas from Baja to the eastern United States and south into South America. The breeding-plumaged bird shown here was at Fort Myers, Lee Co.

Ibis' are rather quiet birds, only grunting or croaking on breeding grounds.

Both the male and female take turns in guarding the nest site until the chicks are large enough to defend themselves. In addition, both parents help feed the chicks.

The ibis's preferred breeding habitat is shallow freshwater marshland, especially where islands of vegetation are available. In Texas and Louisiana, the White-faced Ibis breeds in coastal marshes.

Hadada ibis
Bird. Hadada ibises are long-legged wading birds who belong to the same order as herons, storks, and flamingos. Ibises were buried with ancient Egyptian mummies as gifts to their gods.

Sacred ibis live in large colonies near waterways throughout Africa.

The scarlet ibis (Eudocimus ruber) is a South American wading bird that belongs to the same order as herons, spoonbills, and storks.

The white-faced ibis overlaps with other ibises only in coastal Texas and Louisiana. It is often mistaken for the Glossy Ibis, another dark-feathered wading bird.

The bill of the ibis is usually long with a very curved shape. The bill of the spoonbill is a thick, flattened, and wide-tipped. Unlike most birds, which hunt by sight, most members of this family hunt by touch.
