IGUANA, systematically Iguanidae (Spanish quivalent of Carib iwana), a family of pleurodont lizards, comprising about 50 genera and 300 species.

 


Iguana Life cycle
All species of iguanas lay eggs. After mating with a male iguana, a female digs a nest and lays up to 70 eggs in it. She buries the eggs. The young hatch after about 10 - 14 weeks and dig their way to the surface.

(gwä´n), name for several large lizards of the family Iguanidae, found in tropical America and the Galapagos.

Iguanas tend to have tall, flat plates jutting from their back like spines, when adult.

Iguana This large lizard of tropical America, and summon the Pacific islands, and the West Indies. Its color is greenish which blends in with its surroundings tree branches overhanging running water.

Iguanas range in type from the tree dwelling arboreal type to the terrestrial (land dwelling) and the semi-aquatic (able to live both on land and in water) type. They have well developed limbs and short tongues that are barely protrusible.

The term iguana usually refers to the large species of typical New World lizards in the family Iguanidae ...

Iguana meat is a valuable source of protein; theoretically, farming iguanas could yield more meat per acre than cattle, while requiring only 70% of what a chicken consumes.

Iguana's tails have weakened vertebrae - if caught by the tail, an iguana can break free from its tail and attempt escape. Iguanas are also able to whip their tails in defense, leaving a stinging welt or more serious wound.

Iguanas' stout build gives them a clumsy look, but they are fast and agile on land. They have strong jaws with razor-sharp teeth and sharp tails, which make up half their body length and can be used as whips to drive off predators.

An iguana's diet should be 80% calcium rich vegetables and the other 20% should be fruit and flowers. Without enough calcium, they can become ill or develop serious bone deformations.

Land iguanas are endemic to the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador (4). Conolophus subcristatus is native to six islands (2).

Green Iguanas are excellent swimmers, using their long muscular tails to propel them through the water.
They also have very rough scales on their tails, and a strong whack can send enemies running.

Adult Iguanas reach sexual maturity in five to nine years. The breeding season lasts around two weeks in April and is apparently triggered by the onset on the rainy season.

Desert Iguana

Marine iguanas are widely distributed throughout the islands. Although the different populations vary in size and color, they are all considered to be a single species.

The Green Iguana is from the order Squamata. Species from this order are amphisbaenians, lizards or snakes. There are over 6,000 living species belonging to the squamata order - it is the largest order of all reptiles.

The Desert Iguana is a large, light colored lizard with a long tail. Its snout-vent length can measure almost six inches, and its tail nearly 1 1/2 times longer. It has a small, rounded head with large ear openings, and sturdy legs.

An adult desert iguana is large for a lizard, measuring head-to-tail 25-40 cm (10-16 in). The tail makes up 3/4 of the iguana's length! Active in daylight, desert iguanas change color to regulate body temperature.

The average life span is about 50 years. Rock iguanas are normally blue-gray in color when resting. During breeding season or when excited, they turn turquoise blue over half their body and are referred to as the "blue iguana." ...

I hunted around Mazatlan, and on the road to San Blas, Mexico for several nights in steaming jungle at night and didn't see a one (I did catch my first Boa Constrictor, which was a thrill, plus many other crocodile and Iguana adventures).

They hunt about 19 species of medium sized and large mammals that live in trees, like monkeys, sloths, opossums, large reptiles like iguanas, large rodents and other birds.

Diet: Eagles are carnivores; they hunt and scavenge during the day (they are diurnal). Harpies eat sloths, monkeys, opossums, large reptiles (like iguanas), large rodents, and other birds.

Although it has a solid body, it has smaller legs than iguanas giving the limbs a delicate appearance. This reptile has rough scales on its head. The scales on its back have pronounced keels, and the belly scales are arranged in ten rows.

Many terrestrial reptiles such as green iguanas, employ this tactic when they dive underwater to escape predators. Animals can also employ this strategy when they are not underwater.

Known prey includes rabbits, rodents, pacarana, pacas, agouti, young peccaries, monkeys, lesser anteaters, iguanas, tree lizards, frogs, crabs, and small turtles. Ocelots pursue prey primarily on the ground.
