The Jacanas are long-legged marsh birds belonging to the group of tropical waders in the family Jacanidae.

 


The Jacanas by the way are called "Little Leaf Chickens" in German. Just a suggestion in case the poll doesn't lead to a clear result.
Jah-KA-nah is how I pronounce it too. I suppose there's always ‘lilytrotter'.

The African Jacana (Actophilornis africanus) is a member of the rail family. Like jacanas elsewhere, this species has extremely long toes, allowing it to walk lightly across floating vegetation as the individual here is demonstration.

Northern Jacana (Jacana spinosa)
The Northern Jacana is distributed in Central America and the West Indies. It is found on marshes, swamps and lakes with emergent vegetation where it feeds on insects and small fish.

Closely related to this bird is another first described by Linnaeus as a species of Parra (see Jacana), to which group it certainly does not belong, but separated therefrom by Illiger to form the genus Chauna, and now known as C.

Several Comb-crested Jacana (right) walked among pink flowering water lilies.

The American jaçana (10 in./25 cm long), Jacana spinosa, is cinnamon red with striking yellow-green wing patches. The female jaçana is slightly larger than the male, but has similar coloration.

We also saw many birds on this cruise, including some pretty good ones. This large-footed fellow is Irediparra gallinacea (Comb-crested Jacana or Lily Trotter).
