JACKAL (Turk. chakal), a name properly restricted to Canis aureus, a wolf-like wild member of the dog family inhabiting eastern Europe and southern Asia, but extended to include a number of allied species.

Golden Jackal Characteristics
The Golden Jackal - the largest of the jackals - resembles a smallwolf, but it has a comparatively more slender build, shorter legs and shorter tail. Its appearance varies considerably across its range.
Jackals can carry rabies and their close family units plus their aggressive response to intruders means that rabies is easily spread through the Jackal population.
Jackals will often follow lions and other big cats to scavenge their kills.
Life span
Golden jackals live for 12-14 years in captivity.
Statistics
Body length: 70-85cm, Tail length: 25cm, Standing height: 40cm, Weight: 8-10kg.
Two jackals will pair for life and after a gestation period of 60 days, raise 2 - 6 pups in a vacant burrow. Parents will both take turns to feed them, usually from mouth. Burrows may have several exits for the jackals to escape from when in danger.

Jackals are very vocal creatures. Yipping calls are made when the family gathers and are specific to individual families. Non-members do not recognize, or respond to the calls of other families.

Coyotes, like wolves, are members of the dog family. With their long, coarse fur, bottle-shaped tails, and large, erect ears, they resemble small German shepherds.

The first group consisted of the small jackal-like hyaenas, which were similar to the present mongooses and civets and had rudimentary jaws and a poor dentition.
One of the best-known jackal-like hyaenids is Ictitherium viverrinum. Its first remains in Europe turn up in Central Europe from 11 million years ago. It ranged over Western Europe until approximately 7 million years ago, when it began to vanish.

Many people believe that the Augur Buzzard and the Jackal Buzzard are the same bird. They are very similar, but are not the same.
