The better known English name is derived from the jackass penguin's peculiar call, which allegedly sounds like a donkey's bray. Also apropos is the Adélie penguin of Antartica, Pygoscelis adeliae.

The Humboldt and jackass penguins prefer a sheltered retreat, such as a burrow, and utilize sticks and other debris to form the nest. Others, such as the Adélies, incubate their eggs in the open on nests formed of stones or sticks.

The Bowsprit Tortoises, specifically on Dassen Island, have been found to have an inverse relationship with the Jackass Penguins where if the penguin population decreases, the tortoise population rises.

The smaller jackass penguins, Spheniscus demersus, are named for their braying cry, and crested penguins are distinguished by yellow plumes on either side of the head.
