Their call resembles a donkey's bray, hence their alternative name of jackass penguins.

The better known English name is derived from the jackass penguin's peculiar call, which allegedly sounds like a donkey's bray. Also apropos is the Adélie penguin of Antartica, Pygoscelis adeliae.

The Humboldt and jackass penguins prefer a sheltered retreat, such as a burrow, and utilize sticks and other debris to form the nest. Others, such as the Adélies, incubate their eggs in the open on nests formed of stones or sticks.

The Bowsprit Tortoises, specifically on Dassen Island, have been found to have an inverse relationship with the Jackass Penguins where if the penguin population decreases, the tortoise population rises.

The smaller jackass penguins, Spheniscus demersus, are named for their braying cry, and crested penguins are distinguished by yellow plumes on either side of the head.

humboldti found further north off the coasts of northern Chile and Peru except the Humboldt Penguin has a larger pink area at the base of the bill. It looks even more like the Jackass Penguin S.

incubate their eggs between the their feet in a fold of skin. The smaller jackass Penguins are named for their braying cry, and crested peelings and are distinguished by yellow plumes on either side of the head.
