Description.

Jaguar (Panthera onca)
No photo of the Jaguar available.
The Jaguar is from the order Carnivora. The Carnivora (or carnivores) are meat eating mammals.

Jaguars are wild cats that live in , swamps, , and shrubby areas from South and Central America. These solitary felines often have dens in caves. Jaguars are territorial. They are very good swimmers.

Jaguar coats are patterned by rosettes of 4 or 5 dark markings arranged around a central light area, often with dark spots inside. Their relatively heavy, stocky bodies (compared to leopards, for example) prevent jaguars from being good climbers.

Jaguars are good swimmers and frequently hunt around bodies of water.

Jaguars once lived throughout the southwestern United States, Central and South America. They were hunted to extinction in most of their range in the United States and have only recently started repopulating their former range.

White-lipped peccaries are a major prey species of the jaguar (Panthera onca), and are also hunted by puma (Puma concolor) (Mayer and Wetzel, 1987; Schmidt, 1990; Carillo et al., 2002).

The spots of cheetahs are unique for big cats in that their spots are solid, whereas jaguars and leopards have open spots. The spots most likely help camouflage cheetahs while they stalk their prey, or act to confuse their prey while in chase.

Our first stop was a road to the Canyon de Tigre where a Jaguarundi had been seen on the trip last year. We stopped at a summer campground on a small, clear river lined with large Montezuma Bald Cypress Trees.

Sloths are preyed upon by ocelots and jaguars, particularly when sloths are on or near the ground. Harpy eagles may take young sloths. When pressed, sloths can defend themselves effectively and vigorously with teeth and claws.

They have even been reported to attack jaguars and humans, although this is not common. Anacondas kill by constriction and are not venomous. When searching for food they normally wait in the water with nothing but their nose breaking the surface.

The puma is North Americas second largest cat after the jaguar. It is a successful predator because it is highly adaptable to many different climates. The Puma likes to eat deer, elk, antelope and sheep.

The small cats include some of the most delightful animals you will see in a zoo: animals like the delicate margay, the beautiful ocelot, the lithe jaguarundi.

Several species of the larger spotted cats (leopard and jaguars) do have black color phases. An exotic cat called a jaguarundi, which looks somewhat similar to a cougar -- just a smaller size, has a black phase.

The African elephant's size makes them hard for predators to eat, such as leopards, lions, or jaguars. At night, the adults form a circle around the calves to protect them from danger.
