Juncos are ground-feeders. Insects and other arthropods form the bulk of their diet in the spring and summer, and weed and grass seeds and waste grain in the fall and winter.
The junco is most readily identified in life by its white outer tail feathers, conspicuous in flight.
Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis) is an extremely variable species which occurs across all of the U.S. and Canada. There are a number of "forms" or subspecies, most of which may be distinguished in the field.

With a black head and chest, dark grey upper parts, and a clean white belly, the Black Phoebe looks like a Dark-eyed "Slate-colored" Junco. This small songbird has a slight crest, medium long tail, and chunky build. The sexes are alike.
Mourning doves rank second to dark-eyed juncos as the most commonly observed backyard bird. Primarily a ground feeder, doves will visit platform feeders.
I discovered that it's especially full of those annoying birds like towhees and juncos that hop around in the bushes and leaf litter sounding like lizards. However, herp-wise it was a disappointment.
