More on Kea
Parrot - common name for members of the order Psittaciformes, comprising 315 species of colorful birds, pantropical in distribution, including the parakeet.

A Kea stalks through the warren of shearwater nest holes, bending down every now and then, head cocked to listen. The shearwater chicks crouch silently in their burrows but occasionally they call. The Kea reacts swiftly and starts to dig.

Kea
Keas are incredibly versatile parrots with considerable intelligence, often compared favourably with primates - which is how they received their nickname of 'mountain monkeys'.

The Kea is now a protected species, but was once hunted for a bounty paid by farmers for killing their sheep. An estimated 150,000 Keas were slaughtered during this period.

The kea's generalist diet and ability to adapt to extreme environmental changes allowed them to survive when many other island birds went extinct.
