Native to the Great Barrier Reef, the pygmy goby (Eviota sigillata) can live up to 59 days. It stole the record from the African turquoise killifish (Nothobranchius furzeri), which survives for 12 weeks in seasonal rain pools.
A year-round resident of tidal creeks and wetlands, this brownish-green saltwater minnow may reach a maximum length of 5 inches. Its Indian name means "they go in great numbers." It is also known as the common killifish.
At least four species of Asian estuarine and freshwater gobies and the rainwater killifish (Lucania parva), have been introduced to California and may compete or displace tidewater goby when they occur in the same areas.
