Scientific Name: Ophiophagus hannah
Family: Elapidae
Adult Size: This is the largest venomous snake, commonly 12 to 14 feet long, with a record of over 16 feet. Large specimens may weigh more than 20 pounds.

King cobras have short fangs but can strike in a highly accurate downward thrust. To achieve this, the king cobra can raise one third of its body length as high as 4-5 feet off the ground. Their fangs are hollow tubes through which venom is passed.

Daily Life: King cobras are active by day and night, but are rarely seen. They hunt by smell, 'tasting' the air with their forked tongues to track their prey.

The King cobra is ophiophagous; it feeds almost entirely on other snakes, even venomous ones, although it sometimes preys on small rodents and birds. It will only attack humans if provoked or in other extreme circumstances that threaten its survival.

The king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), or hamadryad, largest of all venomous snakes, is found in S Asia; it may reach a length of 18 ft (5.5 m) and feeds chiefly on other snakes.

The large hood of the Indian cobra has a spectacle like pattern . The asiatic king cobra or hamadryad , which can grow to a length of 14 to 18 ft., but its hood has no pattern which it spreads, as does the common Cobra, when agitated or startled.
