The Giant Kingbird is now endemic to Cuba having disappeared from the Bahamas and Caicos islands. It is classified as Endangered by Birdlife International and there are less than 1,000 individuals left.

A Mockingbird nest with three babies was apparently blown out of the evergreen tree in our backyard. We quickly found a basket and layered it with spaghnum moss and tied it up in the tree next to the original nest. We put the babies in it.

The Mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) is a member of the Mimidae family (mimic thrushes). It is a Robin-sized bird (9 to 11 inches), slender with a long gray tail and white patches on the wings and tail.

The mockingbird is very territorial. It dives and attacks intruders that come too close to its territory. It may even attack its own reflection!

The Northern Mockingbird lives in a wide variety of natural and human-modified areas and is common in suburban areas and towns.

At Busby turn right again (south) onto Road 314 and follow it for 26 miles past the Rosebud Battlefield. The good birding starts on road 314 with numerous Eastern and Western Kingbirds, Kestrels and Mountain Bluebirds.

Not only the Cactus Wren but the House Finch, Roadrunner, and Mockingbird, among others, recognize that cacti deter predators and select cacti for nest sites when possible.

Scissor-tailed Flycatchers are distinctive birds with very long outer tail feathers. The tails of males are longer than females. Juveniles will have very short tails and might be confused with Western Kingbird (rare on the UTC).
