(k´w) or apteryx(p´trks), common name for the smallest member of an order of primitive flightless birds related to the ostrich, the emu, and the cassowary.

Kiwi calls are usually heard an hour before dawn and an hour after dusk, the calls being more frequent on dark moon less nights.

Kiwi Or apteryx, being the smallest of an order of a primitive flightless birds that includes also the ostrich, the emu, and the cassowary. The Maoris gave its name for its shrill, piping call, and is most closely related to the extinct moa.

The kiwi is generally nocturnal (most active at night). It belongs to the group of ratites, flightless birds that also include the ostrich, emu, and rhea. There are 6 species of kiwi (genus Apteryx). The kiwi is in danger of extinction.

The kiwi has to be one of the oddest creatures on the forest floor.
The kiwi is one of New Zealand's strangest creatures and hunts in the forest at night. It has fur-like feathers and it sniffs out its food like a mammal.

Kiwi Couples: After an initial meeting during mating season (June to March), kiwi usually live as monogamous couples. The pair will meet in the nesting burrow every few days and call to each other at night.

I drove back to the island in the evening and met Greg and Tony for the walk. Greg provided us with torches (flashlights) covered with red paper. It was a beautiful warm evening.

Kiwi are shy and usually nocturnal. Their mostly nocturnal habits may be a result of habitat intrusion by predators, including humans.

It is absolutely wonderful to see any of the 5 species of kiwi. Brown Kiwi is now split into three - North Island Brown Apteryx mantelli, Okarito Brown A. rowi, and Southern Brown A.

And New Caledonia seems particularly expensive if you're using Kiwi dollars. With pounds or Euros it probably seems fine.

This is a group of large, flightless birds that also includes the extinct elephant bird and moa and the extant ostrich, rhea, kiwi, and tinamou.

The emu, along with the ostrich, cassowary, kiwi and rhea, are flightless birds called ratites, meaning they have a flat breastbone.

The world's only wingless bird is the kiwi of New Zealand.
Migrating ducks and geese often fly in V-shape formations.

Zoo Diet
: ZU/PREEM primate diet, fruit gelatine, kiwi, apples, oranges, grapes, bananas, cantaloupe, red beets, hard-boiled eggs, peanuts, avocados, mealworms, crickets, yams, trace mineralized salt lick, Redoxin Vitamin C, and flax seed oil .

They belong to the Ratite Family like the Emu, Ostrich, Rhea and Kiwi. They are fruit-eating (frugivore) animals that disperse over a hundred species of rainforest trees and vines.

Diet: Seed mix of safflower, wild bird food, buckwheat, some sunflower, various millets, canary seed, oats and hemp; millet spray (also sprouted); fruit ( apple, kiwi, orange), greenfood and vegetables (carrot, sweet peppers, cucumber); ...

The emu is flightless, and like other "ratite" birds (large flightless birds including the ostrich, cassowary, rhea and kiwi) it does not have a keel, used in flighted birds for anchoring flight muscles.
