Kookaburras, known as the Laughing Jackasses of Australia, are from the family Kingfishers.

Kookaburras are very large terrestrial kingfishers native to Australia and New Guinea, the name a loanword from Wiradjuri guuguubarra, which is onomatopoeic of its call.

Kookaburras mate for life and live in extended family groups. They usually occupy the same territory year-round. They nest in hollow trees, termite nests, or nooks and crevices of buildings.

The Kookaburra is a large, noisy bird from forests on the islands of Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea. Its loud, distinctive call sounds like human laughter. The Kookaburra is the largest member of the kingfisher family.

As a rule, the kookaburra does not catch fish, feeding instead on crabs, large insects, mice, rats and reptiles. During the nesting season of small birds, the kookaburra often robs their nests.

Kookaburras begin their breeding cycle in October, the Australian spring. Courtship includes vocalizations and conspicuous display flights high over the treetops. Once a pair selects a breeding territory they begin nest construction.

Laughing kookaburras have a complex social structure. A pair may remain in a semi-monogamous relationship with helpers to assist with the care of the young.
