Lesser kudu
Tragelaphus imberbis
A shy reddish-brown antelope with distinctive white stripes and large ears. The males have impressive spiral horns.

Kudu rely on concealment and spend nearly all their time hidden in thick bush.

Kudu, or koodoo, is the Hottentot name for the greater kudu, a close relative. The 'lesser' denotes the smaller size and lack of mane of this antelope when compared to the greater kudu. Tragos (Greek) a he-goat;.

Kudu horns have spirals, which allow males to spar by interlocking horns. The males then proceed to shove and twist until one opponent is knocked off balance and thrown down. Some reports show male kudus found with locked horns, even in death.

Any kudu with horns over 50 inches is a good trophy but most PHs will use 55 inches as a starting point. The horns usually must be going into their third full curl.

The Greater Kudu is extremely wary and depends on woodlands and thickets for concealment as it browses.
Greatly enlarged ears suggest an acute sense of hearing. The Greater Kudu seldom vocalizes except for an alarm bark and a few mother/infant calls.

The greater kudu lives in central and southern Africa, in rocky hill country or on brush-covered plains. The animal's ability to easily leap obstacles 2.5 m (8 ft.) in height is taken into account by farmers when building fences within its range.

The handsome head of the male lesser kudu, with his elegant spiraled horns, is the symbol of the Saint Louis Zoo.
