Ladybugs also called lady beetles are among the most familiar insects; easily recognizable are benign guardians of gardens, eating aphids and other pests that threaten our plants.

Ladybugs are also called lady beetles or, in Europe, ladybird beetles. There are about 5,000 different species of these insects, and not all of them have the same appetites. A few ladybugs prey not on plant-eaters but on plants.

We keep ladybug beetles at our Zoo whenever possible. Look for them at the Insectarium.

Many ladybugs are brightly colored to advertise to predators that they are not worth the effort! If disturbed, they can release a foul-smelling chemical from their "knees" to keep enemies away.

Caulking exterior cracks and crevices before the ladybugs enter in the fall is effective. Sweeping and vacuuming will safely remove ladybugs that have already found their way into the home. Insecticides are not recommended.

Ladybugs, scarabs and fireflies are all Coleoptera. They have hard, shell-like forewings, or elytra, from which the order gets its name. The word 'koleos' means 'sheath' in Greek, and 'ptera' means 'wing'.
