Lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) is a freshwater char living mainly in lakes in northern North America. Other names for it include mackinaw, lake char (or charr), touladi, and grey trout.

Lake trout are indigenous or native to North America and are found in every province and territory, with the exceptions of Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island. They are well established in Alaska and the Arctic islands.

Lake trout were once a valued commercial fish in Lake Superior but were almost eliminated there by the sea lamprey, an exotic fish that attaches itself to other fish and eventually kills them.

Lake trout are the largest of the trout family, ranging up to 35 kg (77 lbs). They provide spectacular sport in the cold water of Great Bear and Great Slave Lakes, and in smaller lakes on the mainland and Arctic Islands.

Lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush), like brook trout, actually belong to the char genus. Lake trout inhabit many of the larger lakes in North America and live much longer than rainbow trout which have an average maximum life span of 7 years.

It spread throughout the lakes, having a devastating effect on the populations of many fish, including lake trout. Since then, the invasive lamprey population has been brought under control.

A fourth genus, Cristivomer, contains one species, the common lake trout, and one subspecies, the siscowet, or fat trout.

The species of fish stocked in Wisconsin include brook trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, lake trout, coho salmon, chinook salmon, steelhead, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, lake sturgeon, muskellunge, northern pike, and walleye.

and Canada were spending $8 million per year on control of the exotic sea lamprey and another $12 million per year to restore lake trout populations that were devastated by lamprey invasions (Newman 1991).

Lake (Average 7 - 14 inches) Size weighing between 3 and 6 pounds are caught regularly. The ideal temperature for lake trout is near 50 degrees, so they're usually found on or near the bottom of the water body.

Red foxes have been known to eat and feed to their young lake trout weighing 1.5- 3 kg, which they caught by leaping from the shore onto fish schooling in shallow water.
