After weaning the ewe drives the lamb away by biting its ears. Communal feeding grounds often include areas with a rich food supply such as orchards or vineyards.

Sheep are mainly used for their wool, meat (Mutton or lamb depending on age) , also for the skins and the milk from which cheese is made. Mainly found in temperate areas and to thrive on roughages.

Ewes usually give birth to one lamb, in May; twins are extremely rare. The lambs can follow their mothers within a day after birth, and nurse for 4-5 months. Bighorns eat seasonally available grasses and other vegetation, and cactus in the desert.

The mother gives birth to a single lamb after a gestation period of about 6 months. They are more frequently born during the rainy season when vegetation is plentiful.

Females begin breeding at six months and most will lamb every 8 months. Gestation period is 5 months. A ewe will birth twins about 4 out of 5 times and triplets are not uncommon. Single lambs weigh about eight pounds, twins, four to five pounds.

A single lamb is born after a gestation of about 210 days, with all known (captive) births occurring at night. The weight at birth is approximately 1.3 kg, and the young can stand and walk the same day it is born.

In May, after six months of gestation, a single offspring is born to each pregnant ewe. At only a few days old, the little lamb is already very agile, capable of following its mother and playing on the rocky slopes with the other lambs.

The name of the Lammergeier originates from German, in which language it means "lamb-vulture.
