Animals Least WeaselLeatherback Sea Turtle

Leatherback Turtles are the largest living marine reptiles and live almost their entire lives at sea. The only time that they are on land is when the female turtles lay eggs, and when hatchlings emerge from the nest and make their way to ocean.

Leatherbacks have the widest global distribution of all reptile species, and possibly of any vertebrate. They can be found in the tropic and temperate waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, as well as the Mediterranean Sea.

The leatherback turtle is the largest species of turtle alive today. It can reach a total length of 2.5 m (8.2 ft.) with a weight of 680 kg (1,500 lb.).

The Leatherback; Tinglar was first reported by Vandelli, 1761. In general members of this order are found all over the world, except for Antarctica. Turtles can range in size from just a few cms, to two metres.

The leatherback sea turtle is considered an endangered species throughout its worldwide range. It is listed in Appendix 1 of the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), a list of the most highly endangered animals worldwide.

The largest leatherback ever measured washed ashore dead in 1988 on a beach in Wales. This male specimen was measured by scientists at 2019 pounds.

Reproduction: Leatherbacks are known to nest on the coast of Florida and sometimes, though rarely, Georgia. Females nest between April and July and usually lay 80-85 eggs.

The Leatherback Sea Turtle is endangered. Plastic bags in its ocean environment have contributed to many deaths as it mistakes them for jellyfish - its main food. It is a large turtle with streamlined leathery carapace (shell).

Leatherback nesting beaches normally have a steep slope, have high energy wave action, and are in close proximity to deep oceanic water. A typical female will nest five to seven times per nesting season with an average of 10 days between nestings.

Highly pelagic turtles, leatherbacks have occasionally been seen as far N as Norway and as far S as New Zealand. They sometimes enter shallow coastal waters, but come ashore only to lay eggs. They are omnivorous feeders.

Leatherback turtles follow the general sea turtle body plan of having a large, dorsoventrally flattened, round body with two pairs of appendages, a large head and a short tail.

Leatherback hatchlings look mostly black when you are glancing down on them, and their flippers are margined in white. Rows of white scales give hatchling leatherbacks the white striping that runs down the length of their backs.

Leatherbacks have a unique system of blood supply to their bones and cartilage. This enables their body temperature to stay several degrees above the water temperature and allows them to tolerate cold water, rather like a mammal.

The leatherback is listed as endangered by COSEWIC. Leatherback are endangered because of human interference—humans collect turtle eggs and create light pollution on beaches that disorients newly hatched turtles.

Habits: Leatherbacks feed almost exclusively on jellyfish, but also eat tunicates and seaweed. The mouth and esophagus have backward-pointing spines that aid in swallowing jellyfish.

Leatherbacks are strong swimmers and undertake long journeys - tagged individuals have been known to cross the Atlantic. After nesting the females circle the site, possibly to reinforce it in their memory to aid return.
