The leatherback sea turtle is considered an endangered species throughout its worldwide range. It is listed in Appendix 1 of the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), a list of the most highly endangered animals worldwide.
A female leatherback sea turtle heaves herself from the surf at night to nest. Females often return to the same nesting areas where they were born to produce their own offspring.

The Leatherback Sea Turtle is endangered. Plastic bags in its ocean environment have contributed to many deaths as it mistakes them for jellyfish - its main food. It is a large turtle with streamlined leathery carapace (shell).
Description: Leatherback sea turtles are the largest of all living turtles. It is also one of the largest living reptiles, surpassed only by some species of crocodiles. Adults range from 53-74 in. (135-189 cm).

The Leatherback Sea Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) is the biggest of all living turtles, reaching a length of over 2.7 m (8 ft) and weight of 900 kg (1,500 lb). The Leatherback Sea Turtle is found in all tropic and subtropic oceans.
The largest chelonian is the great leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), which reaches a shell length of 200 centimetres (6.6 ft) and can reach a weight of over 900 kilograms (2,000 lb).
Marine turtles (family Cheloniidae) and leatherback sea turtles (family Dermochelyidae) spend all of their lives a sea except for females who briefly go ashore at night to lay their eggs. In Florida, egg-laying occurs in the late spring and summer.
