Leatherback Turtles are the largest living marine reptiles and live almost their entire lives at sea. The only time that they are on land is when the female turtles lay eggs, and when hatchlings emerge from the nest and make their way to ocean.

 


The leatherback turtle is the largest species of turtle alive today. It can reach a total length of 2.5 m (8.2 ft.) with a weight of 680 kg (1,500 lb.).

Leatherback turtles follow the general sea turtle body plan of having a large, dorsoventrally flattened, round body with two pairs of appendages, a large head and a short tail.

The leatherback turtle has survived for more than a hundred million years, but is now facing extinction.

Leatherback Turtle Dermochelys coriacea
Leatherback sea turtles differ from other turtles in having a thick rubbery skin rather than a hard shell.. There are 7 longitudinal ridges which give the turtles a distinct look.

A leatherback turtle is covered with leathery skin, not scutes (horny plates) like other sea turtles. It is the only marine turtle whose backbone is not attached to the inside of its shell.

The leatherback turtle's Dermochelys coriacea shell is a little different. It does not provide the bony, heavy protection of other turtle shells.

After the leatherback turtle, the loggerhead sea turtle is the second-largest marine turtle. It has a blunt head, powerful jaws, and a steeply domed carapace. It hunts and eats hard-bodied animals, such as crabs, lobsters, and clams.

Shell size can range from about 3 inches (7.6 cm), the Bog Turtle Clammy Mullen, up to about 8 feet (2.4 meters) the Leatherback Turtle.
