Leopard Frogs are popular because they are fun to watch climb, swim and jump. They do however like to hid and burrow during the day and become active at night.

Northern Leopard Frog
Rana pipiens
Description: Slender greenish to brownish frog with dark spots which are usually edged with a lighter color. It has a light stripe along its upper jaw and tends to grow to be a little over 3 inches in length.

Northern Leopard Frogs are brown to green frogs with three rows of irregularly arranged black spots located on the dorsal surface. These spots are most usually outlined in a whitish, cream colored border.

The Leopard Frogs

During the nineteenth century, scientists grouped most green frogs with brown spots and yellow dorsolateral folds or ridges (lengthwise ridges of skin along the sides of the back) as leopard frogs.

Plains Leopard Frog (Rana blairi)
Description: To 4 3/8" snout-vent length. Color brown, with darker spots. Usually a light spot on eardrum. Dorsolateral folds usually broken and offset towards center at rear.

Leopard Frogs are commonly used for dissection in biology classes. Unfortunately, well-meaning teachers and lab aides may release unneeded animals, perhaps believing it is kinder than outright killing.

Leopard frogs will eat just about anything they can fit in their mouths. They sit still and wait for prey to happen by, then pounce with their powerful legs.

The leopard frog is the most familiar frog in Minnesota. They may grow to 3 1/2 inches body length. They may be varying shades of green or brown. There are round black spots scattered randomly about the back and on the sides.

The leopard frog's pattern helps it to blend into vegetation at the edge of the water.
Lots of Leapers
Plains leopard frogs are one of the most abundant frogs in Missouri.

Southern leopard frogs are very adaptable and are comfortable in many habitats - they just need cover and moisture. These frogs are great jumpers, traveling high and far in just a few jumps. They consume insects and small invertebrates.

Southern Leopard Frog Species Profile
If the proper environment is provided, the southern leopard frog will thrive under captive conditions. A 20 gallon aquarium should be the minimum size enclosure to accommodate this species.

Dorsolateral folds are present. There are two color mutations of the leopard frog in Minnesota: the Burn's leopard frog which lacks spots, and the Kandiyohi leopard frog which has flecking between spots.

Plains Leopard Frog - Rana blairi. This grassland species barely enters the southwestern part of the Chicago region, with records from Will, Kankakee, and Grundy Counties.

Leopard frogs are rare in Rhode Island and throughout the region (Klemens 1993).

The Leopard Frogs are both variable in pattern and similar to each other, making it difficult to distinguish species. These frogs can be divided into two arbitrary groups based on the form of the dorsolateral folds.
