Most wild lions can be found in the savannas, grasslands, woodlands and brush in Africa, south of the Sahara desert. There are also a small number in India, in Asia.

Lion have the typical body profile of a cat with a powerful muscular body, short robust legs, enlarged paws, shoulders that project above the spine when walking and an extremely long tail that serves as a means of balance when charging.

A lion is a digitigrade, or toe walker; that is his heel doesn't touch the ground. His loud roar is made possible by the cartilage in his throat having ossified into bone (referred to as the Hyoid structure).

The lion is a magnificent animal that appears as a symbol of power, courage and nobility on family crests, coats of arms and national flags in many civilizations.

The lion-tailed macaque is in danger of extinction. There are fewer than 4,000 of these animals left in the wild. The reasons for their decline include forest clearance for crops, fuel wood, and development projects, as well as hunting.

Size: Lion-tailed macaques are usually about two feet long, with an additional 18 inches of tail. Males grow slightly larger than females. Weight ranges from 15 to 33 pounds.

Aware however that lion populations are bound to be in conflict with human occupation of lion habitat by settlement or pastoralists.

When ready for mating, a male and female lion will withdraw from the remainder of the pride for several days, during which time they will couple repeatedly, neither hunting nor searching for food.

The African Lion (Panthera leo) is well known to people around the world from movies and books. In person, it is an impressive beast to behold.

In most countries Lion are hunted with baiting, with the hunter lying in ambush from a constructed blind about 30-50 yards off.

Lion tamarins have a mane derived from long hairs on the top of the head, cheeks and throat.

African Lion
Mammal. Male lions are the only cats with tufted tails and manes. They can reach a length of 2.5 meters (8 feet) and a height of 1.2 meters (4 feet). Unlike most other cat species, lions are very social animals.

Most sea lion pups are born in late June. Pups are well developed at birth. Their eyes are open, they can vocalize, and even swim a little.

The golden lion tamarin (also called the golden lion marmoset) is a small, squirrel-sized mammal with a lion-like mane. Tamarins live in small family groups. They are diurnal (most active during the day); at night, they rest in the cavity of a tree.

RANGE:
The lion is found throughout the south Sahara desert and in parts of southern and eastern Africa.
HABITAT:
The African lion inhabits grassy plains, savannahs, open woodlands and scrub country.

The Mountain Lion is solitary, except during breeding. Their young (typically 2-3 cubs) can be born almost any time of the year. Females usually breed every two to three years.

The mountain lion died after being struck by an SUV in the City of Milford, near Exit 55 of the Merritt Parkway. The driver of the vehicle was unhurt.

The Mountain lion is a very agile animal. It can easily cover 23 ft. in a single leap. They are known for their speed and quickness. One wouldn't think that such a large animal could be quick, but they are.

California Sea Lion
The California sea lion is a type of seal that lives in cool waters off the rocky coast of western North America. This marine mammal makes a roaring noise (hence its name), barks, and honks.

The Hooker's sea lion, Phocarctos hookeri, is one of the rarest and most endangered sea lions.

The Australian Sea Lion is found mainly on offshore islands of Western Australia and Southern Australia. There are only about 10,000 left but the population is stable and it is classified as Near Threatened.

California Sea Lion
General description
Typical coloring ranges from tan to chocolate brown and may appear black when wet. The head has a pointed muzzle and the profile resembles that of a dog.

The California sea lion is probably the most commonly seen pinniped along our coast. It has distinct external ears, large eyes, and elongated front flippers. Its hind flippers can be turned forward under its body, allowing it to walk on land.

The Australian sea-lion is different from other sea-lions because they have no set breeding season, and pups may be born at any time of year. The breeding takes place on rocky beaches.
