Loggerhead Turtles
By far, the most common sea turtle inhabiting our southeastern coastal waters is the loggerhead, Caretta caretta. Thousands of nesting females crawl ashore each year on the beaches of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas.

The Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus) occurs across much of the United States but it can be rare and local in distribution, especially in the northeast. The species remains quite common across most of Texas.

The Loggerhead Sea Turtle is the most common sea turtle in Florida. The top shell of an adult loggerhead is reddish-brown while the scaly underside of the belly is yellow.

The Loggerhead is from the order Testudines. All turtles are testudines (or Chelonia). There are more than 280 different species belonging to this order.

Loggerhead sea turtles are found in coastal tropical and subtropical waters often extending to temperate waters in search of food. Found in the Atlantic Ocean from Argentina to Nova Scotia.

Loggerheads are found in temperate and tropical coastal habitats and are sometimes even found in freshwater streams and rivers. The majority of their time is spent in the open ocean, but females do visit undisturbed beaches for nesting.

The loggerhead shrike (Lanus ludovicianus) is a predatory songbird about the size of a blackbird. It is bluish-gray above and white below. The wings and tail are mostly black with white patches.

My wife and I took a Moreton Bay cruise in the hopes of spotting a dugong, but it was not to be. We did manage to spy many bottle-nosed dolphins and a few Loggerheads though. None of the turtles stayed above water long enough for a photo.

Most Atlantic Loggerheads nest in Florida where they are under extreme pressure from beach development. Some nesting further north to the Carolinas and even Virginia.

Went birding in the Delta with Don Reinberg on Wednesday. We had nice view of Ferruginous Hawks, a Rough-legged Hawk, Prairie Falcon, and even the Northern Shrike (along Cook Lane, just south of 113, on the west side of the road).

Loggerhead sea turtles are known for their migratory behavior. Some individuals have been recorded migrating up to 4,828 km. Adults and juveniles in temperate waters migrate towards the equator for winter to avoid cold stunning in waters under 10 ÂșC.

The loggerhead is the largest hard shelled turtle, and the second largest species of turtle in the world (next to the leatherback). The loggerhead turtle has been listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act since 1978.

The Loggerhead Shrike occurs throughout most of the United States during the breeding season. In the southern half of the country, including Georgia, it occurs all year.

The Loggerhead Musk Turtle, Sternotherus minor minor, is found in freshwater springs and spring runs in the panhandle and northern peninsula. It has a dark peaked shell and has black spots on its head. Although only 4.5" long, it has quite a bite.

: Eastern loggerhead shrike populations are declining. There are probably less than 100 breed pairs from Manitoba to Quebec. Scientists are not certain about the causes of the decline.

Alligator snapping turtles are also referred to as alligator snappers or loggerheads. These turtles have large heads and powerful jaws. Their shells have three distinct ridges that run from front to back. They are found exclusively in North America.

Each year, tens of thousands of olive ridley, Kemp's ridley, loggerhead green and leatherback turtles are trapped in shrimping operations. Marine turtles are reptiles so when they cannot reach the surface to breathe, they drown.

Frogs and toads often move very short distances to breeding ponds and lakes to lay their eggs. Some sea turtles, like the loggerhead, return year-after-year to the same sandy beach on which they hatched to lay their eggs.
