Loggerhead Turtles
By far, the most common sea turtle inhabiting our southeastern coastal waters is the loggerhead, Caretta caretta. Thousands of nesting females crawl ashore each year on the beaches of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas.

Until the 1970's, Loggerhead turtles were commercially harvested for their meat, eggs, leather, and fat. Its meat and leather are not as valuable as the Green Sea Turtle, and its shell is of less value than the Hawksbill.
Description
The Loggerhead Turtle has a large head. The body is reddish brown or brown. They have flippers with a claw on the front flippers. The shell is armoured with strong horny plates called scutes.
Named for their huge heads and powerful jaws, loggerhead turtles are the largest hard-shelled sea turtles alive today. They have a heart-shaped carapace, which is often covered with commensal organisms such as barnacles and algae.
We saw no dugongs, but we saw some dolphins and loggerhead turtles. Before the boat trip we meandered around Redcliffe where we spotted this young (on the rocks) and mature (on the back of the tree) Eastern Bearded Dragons.

The Atlantic Loggerhead Turtle, Caretta caretta, nests along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. It has a reddish-brown streamlined shell, a large head and broad jaws. It may reach a length of 4 feet and weigh 170-350 pounds.
Activity/Behavior: Loggerhead turtles are active during the day. Because they frequently are close to shore during summer months, they often drown in nets of commercial fishing boats.
Its head is quite large for its size, giving the loggerhead turtle its name. The loggerhead also has thick jaws that it uses to crush clams, crabs, and the other shelled animals that it eats.
Caretta caretta is the world's largest hard-shelled turtle. Loggerhead turtles have large heads (when compared to other species of marine turtles) and strong, muscular jaws (which help them crush prey such as crabs and lobsters).
The loggerhead is the largest hard shelled turtle, and the second largest species of turtle in the world (next to the leatherback). The loggerhead turtle has been listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act since 1978.

Precipitous declines in the population of the Red Knots have been observed in recent years. Predators of horseshoe crabs, such as the currently threatened Atlantic Loggerhead Turtle, have also suffered as crab populations diminish.
The blood of sea turtles can deliver oxygen efficiently to body tissues even at the pressures encountered during diving. During routine activity green and loggerhead turtles dive for about 4 to 5 minutes and surface to breathe for 1 to 3 seconds.
