The Long-eared Owl is a medium sized owl It is brown with streaks, and dark ear-tufts. The female is larger and darker than the male.

The Long-eared Owl (Asio otus) breeds across much of the northern half of the United States and southern Canada. It winters southward across the Midwest and into Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.

The Long-Eared Owl is a medium sized owl which is approximately 35 centimeters long (around 13 inches) and weighs 8-10 ounces. It is called long eared because of the tuft of feather on its head that look like ears.

The Long-eared Owl is often overlooked, due to its extreme nocturnal habits and ability to "freeze" and blend in with its habitat .

Long-eared owls rely on their mottled colors to hide them in the trees as they sleep during the day. At night, they hunt for small rodents like voles, mice, and rats in grassland or at the forest's edge.

Long-eared owls breed in March and April. The females lay four to five white eggs in abandoned nests in trees. The eggs hatch after 26 to 28 days, with female doing all the incubating.

The long-eared owl is medium-sized owl, smaller in size than a woodpigeon. It often looks long and thin, with head feathers (known as ear tufts even though they are not ears) which it raises when alarmed.

The Long-eared Owl - Asio otus (previously: Strix otus) is a species of owl which breeds in Europe, Asia, and North America.

The Long-eared Owl (Asio otus) is not often seen in the Bay Area (at least not by me), but if you visit Mercy Hot Springs in Little Panoche Valley you are virtually guaranteed to see them.

During the day. Long-eared owls hide away, roosting amongst thickly-branched trees. In the autumn and winter, groups of up to 20 owls may roost together.

Long-eared Owls were again present on site this year. Three were found in the village Pines early in the season, but by January only one remained and it was not seen after January 18.

In Ohio meadow voles comprised 90 percent of the individual prey remains in long-eared owl (Asio otus) pellets on a relict wet prairie [44], and in Wisconsin meadow voles comprised 95 percent of short-eared owl (A. flammeus) prey [14].

The most similar species to this owl is the Long-eared Owl. The Long-eared Owl is much smaller than the Great Horned Owl, being only 38 cm (15 in) in length.

The eyes are black, which prevents them from being confused with the yellow eyes of long-eared owls, which can appear black in headlights at night due to their large pupils.

Known predators include the milk snake, black snake, red-tailed hawk, red-shouldered hawk, sparrow hawk, broadwinged hawk, barn owl, short-eared owl, barred owl, horned owl, long-eared owl, screech owl, fox, weasel, and skunk.

Birders search the grove for wintering owls and the campground for Longspurs, Crossbills and winter finches. I recall seeing Sawwhet Owl and Long-eared Owl here.

The long-eared owl is found in North America; the short-eared owl is ubiquitous. The tawny owl is common in England. Owls are classified in the phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, class Aves, order Strigiformes, families Tytonidae and Strigidae.
