This lory has two color phases. The orange and yellow variants have a golden-brown crown, an orange collar, and a white rump. The upper breast is black-barred. The under-wing is orange and the tail is dark blue. The wings are black tipped with orange.

The crimson rosella, red lory or red lowry, is a colourful, if rare, addition to New Zealand's bird life. It was first seen about 1910 near Dunedin but none have been recorded from that area for over 30 years.
It is almost impossible to tell the difference between a lorikeet and a lory although some say the lorikeet has a longer tail than the lori. Also, the lorikeet has a pointed tail while the lori's tail is rounded.
