CANADA LYNX FACTS
Description
The Canada Lynx is usually yellowish-brown and sometimes has dark brown spots. The upper parts often have a grizzled gray appearance. The underside is pale buff color.

The Bobcat (Lynx rufus) is widespread across most of North America and Mexico, but is seldom seen by the casual observer. The animal show here is a captive at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson, Arizona.

Lynx have dense winter coats, and their large feet, padded with thick fur, let them run atop deep snow. A large portion of their diet consists of snowshoe hares, which are similarly equipped to run on snow. Lynx hunt mostly at dawn and dusk.

Lynx sightings
The Canada lynx is a rare wildcat in Minnesota, and is most likely to occur just after the population of their main prey, snowshoe hare, crashes in Canada.

Lynx kittens, like house cats, cover their urine and feces. Adults do not, using them as territorial markers instead. Lynxes are excellent climbers and occasionally swim across rivers and streams.

Lynx populations are subject to dramatic fluctuations. Their numbers peak every nine to ten years, closely following the population cycle of the Snowshoe Hare.

Lynx are shy and solitary, except for mothers with cubs. They mark their territories by urinating on trees and rocks. Male territories are larger and can overlap several female territories.

Lynx usually live in mature forests with dense undergrowth but can also be found in more open forests, rocky areas or tundra.

Bobcat: Lynx rufus
Appearance:
The bobcat (Lynx rufus) is so named because of it's 'bobbed' tail. This may be a misnomer given that its tail has been recorded as being as long as 18 inches.

Lynx numbers go up and down with the population of snowshoes hares. So protecting lynx means protecting hares.
