MACAQUE, a name of French origin denoting the monkeys of the mainly Asiatic genus Macacus, of which one species, the Barbary ape, inhabits North Africa and the rock of Gibraltar.

These macaques (pronounced mah-kaks') live in the forests of the Western Ghats, a mountain range in southeastern India. They spend most of their lives in the treetops.

Japanese Macaque, inhabits the coldest region in the world.
The Snow Monkey of Shimokita Peninsula inhabits the northernmost region of Japan's main island, which is the world's coldest spot inhabited by primates (excluding humans).

Lion-tailed macaques are approximately 1.5 - 2 feet in height, and have a tail length of of 1 - 2 feet. They generally weigh between 10 - 25 pounds. The body of a lion-tailed macaque is covered in long, black hair.

The lion-tailed macaque weighs 7 - 15 kg (15 - 33 lb). It is found in tropical evergreen forest, where it is omnivorous and diurnal and primarily arboreal. Groups of lion-tailed macaques range from 4 - 34 individuals.

They are carnivorous (eats only meat), and are ferocious predators (hunters). Adult dragons eat wild pigs, deer, young buffalo, and on the island of Rinca, long-tailed macaque monkeys.
