MAGPIE, or simply PIE (Fr. pie), the prefix being the abbreviated form of a human name (Margaret'), a bird once common throughout Great Britain, though now nearly everywhere scarce.

The Magpie is common in European folklore, with multiple superstitions surrounding it.[4] Generally speaking, the bird is associated with unhappiness and trouble.
Magpies inhabit open woodlands, savannas or brush-covered country near streams. The nest is built with twigs and is large, bulky and domelike. It usually has two entrances.
Magpies are fully protected by the European Union Birds Directive. The UK Government has derogated (made an exception) from the Directive in relation to control of magpies.
Magpies thrive in wide-open spaces, leaving the deep forests to their crow and raven cousins. Magpies flourished with, and then declined with the great bison herds of earlier days.
Magpie geese often breed in trios rather than pairs. Two females lay their eggs on a floating platform of reeds made by a single male.
Magpie attacks
For most of the year magpies are not aggressive, but for four to six weeks during nesting they will often defend their territory vigorously.
