Maned Wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus)
The animal that is commonly described as looking like a fox, but on stilts, is the maned wolf. Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo
is home to two of these vanishing creatures, a male and a female.

The Maned wolf is named for the black hair that grows on its shoulders and its wolf-like size. However, it is not a true wolf. Instead, it more closely resembles a red fox on stilts.

Description: The maned wolf stands about three feet tall at the shoulder and weighs about 50 pounds. It looks like a long-legged fox, with a reddish-brown coat and a mane along its back.
The Maned Wolf is found in South America, mainly in Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina and in Chile too. It inhabits forests, grasslands and swamp places. In some ways it looks like a big fox however it is a member of a dog family.

Maned wolves have the most incredibly long legs, a characteristic that helps them see above the tall grasses of central South America.
While not often hunted for its coat, the maned wolf is hunted as a reaction to its portrayal as a threat to domesticated livestock, particularly chickens. It faces additional pressures as its grassland habitat is burned for human purposes.
