Mara
Dolichotis patagonum
A rodent which looks a bit like a small deer with long ears, and which lives on the plains and scrubland of Argentina. Males and females form long-term pair bonds, but the young form creches.
Life span

This was a pretty generic looking toad, perhaps 4 inches long. It was hopping about the camp near the dining area.

Patagonian Mara

Also known as the Patagonian cavy, this large rodent is one of the world's few monogamous mammals. Its head and body length is up to 75 cm, and it weighs between nine and 16 kg.

For Mara, our African Wild Dog female, when we realized that she was pregnant, the curator and keepers made a number of crucial decisions.

There is still a possibility that the two forms meet somewhere where the dry scrub converts to humid forest in the Marañon somewhere north of Bagua - and as far as I know nothing is known what happens here.

In Kenya, the largest populations are found in the lands of the Masai Mara, the Masai Mara National Reserve, and the Laikipia and Kajiado rangelands. They occupy about half of their former range in Tanzania.

In the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem the animals make a migratory circle each year of 500 to 1,000 miles. The migration starts after the calving season in January and February on the short grass plains in the southeastern Serengeti.

Mahogany (known as caoba throughout much of Latin America, as mogno in Brazil, mara in Bolivia, and ahuano in Ecuador) is patchily distributed from southern Mexico through Central and into South America, to its southern limits in Bolivia and Brazil.

They are herding animals, living in open wooded savanna and the wide plains of the Serengeti and Masai Mara. They are probably most recognised for their annual migrations when thousands congregate and form vast columns of blue-gray seething animals.

An unusual, large species is the Patagonian cavy, or mara (Dolichotis patagonum), a long-legged, harelike animal that reaches a length of about 21/2 ft (76 cm) and lives in arid regions. The capybara belongs to a related family.

They are the fourth largest rodent, after the capybara, mara, and beaver. The name "porcupine" comes from combining the Latin for pig and French for spine, hence the nickname "quill pig" for the animal.

Some wild relatives of the domestic guinea pig include: capybara, mara, rock cavy, paca, and nutria.

It is confined to the upper Rio Marañón Valley, n. Peru. Of course, one negative in picking a sexually dimorphic species is that the thrill of seeing a female or immature is just not the same thing as the male....

There may be some 300,000 left in the wild; on the Serengeti-Mara Plains alone there are an estimated 150,000 plains zebras.

I love my Z, even though I have trouble finding time with school and work, but I know she loves me and I love her because she begs for her head to be scrached and chirps when you are someplace she is not but are still in eyesight!mara 2005-12-14 ...
