Marbled Murrelets depend on both marine and forested habitat for feeding and breeding, respectively. At sea, they prefer coastal, relatively shallow waters. In more northern areas, the birds range further from shore.
The marbled murrelet is a small seabird that lives in coastal old-growth forests in the Pacific Northwest of North America, from mid-California to Alaska. It is listed as a threatened species due to loss of habitat as old-growth forest is logged.

A Marbled Murrelet?? Anyone else on board may want to add their opinion of this bird to this report . What are the early report records for this bird in these waters? We probably saw 10 Hump-backed whales and 15 Minkes and not sure about Fin-backed.

No Auks build nests but Puffins, the Ancient Murrelet and Cassin's Auklet all dig burrows to nest in. Most species nest on islands or coastal cliffs but the Marbled Murrelet nests in large trees and Kittlitz's Marvelled nests on remote mountain tops.
Although most big Douglas-firs have been cut, extensive areas have been replanted and provide food and cover for squirrels, elk, deer, songbirds and rare bird species, such as the spotted owl and marbled murrelet.
