Marmot Social Lives: Marmots reproduce when about 2 years old. They live in colonies. A colony is a group of about 10 to 20. Each male marmot digs a burrow soon after he wakes up from hibernation.

Hoary marmots can weigh up to 13.5 kg (30 lb.), but are usually 5 to 9 kg (11 to 20 lb.). In summer the hoary marmot will gain body-fat on its diet of lush alpine plants.
Hoary marmots are also very vocal and have a system of alarm calls, whistles, and trills to warn off predators like coyotes, eagles, and foxes. In fact, another name for the hoary marmot is the whistler.
Hoary Marmots are vegetarians, feeding on a large variety of green plants -- grasses and other herbaceous species, which at this elevation, often grow for only eight weeks.

The Hoary Marmot was first reported by Eschscholtz, 1829. In general members of this order are found all over the world, except for Antarctica. The largest living rodent weighs around 50 kilograms or 110 pounds, and this is called the capybara.
Marmots live in social groups, usually a dominant pair and their offspring from previous years. Alpine marmot colonies can be as small as 2-3 or as large as 50 or more animals in one burrow system.
Yellow-bellied marmots are rodents rather similar to squirrels, only bigger. Their closest relatives besides other marmots are the woodchucks that are so common in the eastern U.S.

Marmots are true hibernators, for 6 months the entire family of 15 or so animals huddle together. With outside temperature below freezing their body temperature can drop to 4.5 - 7.5C. Every 3-4 weeks they awaken to defecate and urinate.
