MARSUPIALIA (from Lat. marsupium, a "pouch," or "bag"), the group of mammals in which the young are usually carried for some time after birth in a pouch on the under-surface of the body of the female.

Marsupial Mammals
Marsupials are the group of mammals commonly thought of as pouched mammals (like the wallaby and kangaroo at left). They give live birth, but they do not have long gestation times like placental mammals.

Marsupial babies are born very tiny and undeveloped. Straight after birth the babies attach themselves to their mother's nipples. The babies stay attached until they develop more completely.

A marsupial that lives in North America, and is often seen in urban environments. It 'plays dead' when threatened by predators.

The Marsupial Hyena: Many researchers consider this mammal to be the marsupial equivalent of the hyena because of its body shape, short wide snout and extremely strong jaws, which are capable of crushing bones.

As a marsupial (regardless of whether its ancestor was a possum or vombatiform), Wakaleo would have borne tiny, undeveloped young that developed further in a pouch.

These marsupials are able to glide up to 45 meters (148.5 ft.) and have been observed to leap at and catch moths in flight.

These marsupials also have large and powerful tails. Wallaby tails are not prehensile (gripping), but are useful nonetheless. The animals use them for balance when moving and to prop themselves up in a sitting posture.

Koalas are marsupials and the female has a rear-opening marsupial pouch. The young Koala or "joey" begins to leave the pouch at 5 months and 2 months later has left it for good but still feeds partly off its mother's milk until it is 12 months old.

The tenkile is a marsupial that weighs about 10 kg (22 lb). It is found in mossy mountain forests from 900 - 1500 m (3000 - 5000'). The diet of the tenkile includes tree leaves, ferns, and soft vines.

OPOSSUM, common name for any of the MARSUPIAL mammals constituting the family Didelphidae, which is made up of 11 genera and about 75 species.

DESCRIPTION: The opossum is North America's only marsupial - an animal with a pouch, like a kangaroo or a koala. The possum has been around for at least 70 million years and is one of Earth's oldest surviving mammals.

The adult opossum (Didelphis marsupialis) weighs about seven pounds. It's face is elongate, narrow and coneshaped. The opossum has black, hairless ears that are leathery in texture and tipped in pink or white.

The Virginia opossum, the only marsupial found north of Mexico, is an adaptable omnivore at home on the ground and in the trees. Opossums prefer forested habitats, but they are quite successful even in urban areas.

General information:The Red Kangaroo (Macropus rufus), is the largest living marsupial. These animals are mostly found in the dry inland Australia, including desert, grassland, mallee, and mulga country.
