Range
Portions of South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, extending from the southwest arid biotic zone and eastward into southern savanna and grassland areas.

Meerkats (Suricata suricatta) are highly social mammals that form packs of between 10 and 30 individuals consisting of several breeding pairs. The individuals in a meerkat pack forage together during daylight hours.

Meerkats feed mainly on insects, spiders, and snails, but their prey also includes rodents, ground-nesting birds and their eggs, lizards, and bulbs and roots of select plants. They will even tackle dangerous prey such as scorpions and snakes.

Meerkats (also called suricates) work together in numbers. A few will typically serve as lookouts, watching the skies for birds of prey, such as hawks and eagles, that can snatch them from the ground.

Meerkats live in groups called gangs or mobs.
One meerkat stands guard while the others in the mob play, hunt, or sleep.
An adult meerkat will protect its young from predators and will even sacrifice its life for its young's life.
