Discussion These 2 menhadens, both also called "pogy," occur in huge schools, often weighing hundreds of tons. They support a large industry on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Although all parts of the fish have value, its oil is the principal product.

Diet: Menhaden and Mullet fish. Habitat (where it lives): Along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts. Range (where found in Texas): Texas coast. Life Span: Up to 30 years or more Reproduction: 2 to 4 white eggs.

Diet entirely on fish, mainly menhaden and anchovies, sometimes sardines (Flying-fish in Caribbean). Also swoops to pick up marine worms from mudflats, and takes shorebird chicks. Plunge-dives for small fish, from up to 10 m. Feeds over fishing nets.

They are also known to eat anchovies, menhaden, minnows, shrimp, and eel. They eat about 18-36 kg of fish each day.

Also in this family are the menhadens, pilchards and shads, in total it contains 216 species. Most clupeids feed on plankton, and the majority of species are marine, though a few migrate between the sea and freshwater.

Mike uses Menhaden Oil which can be purchased at a bait store or ordered . To dispense the oil he uses a Fountain Syringe purchased at any drug store. It needs to have an opening at the top and bottom and should be firmly attached to the boat.

Carnivore. Primarily fish (favorite is Atlantic menhaden, a fish with very oily flesh). Requires 4 pounds of fish per day.
Predators and Threats
Raccoons (on nestlings), bald eagles, peregrine falcons and humans.

They primarily prey upon fish such as menhaden, anchovy, sea bass, herring, cod, whiting and flatfish. They also feed on shrimp, mollusks and squid. Harbor seals do not chew their food; they either tear it into chunks or swallow it whole.

Diet
The smooth hammerhead feeds on schooling fish such as herring and menhaden. Other animals in their diet include other sharks (its own species included), shrimp, skates, crustaceans and cephalopods.

The brown pelican, on the other hand, dives on fish (usually a type of herring called menhaden) from above and snares them in its bill.

Baits: metal squids, spoons, plugs, jigs, rigged eels, plastic eels and fish, shrimp and small fish, alewives, flounder, sea herring, menhaden, sand lance, silver hake, smelt, silversides, as well as lobsters, crabs, soft clams, small mussels, ...

On the eastern coast of the United States, they consume mostly menhaden, an abundant fish commercially used for fish meal and oil. On the west coast they eat mostly anchovies and sardines.

Prey includes menhaden, smelt, anchovies, and some crustaceans. Of the world's pelican species, only Brown Pelicans feed by plunge-diving. Pelicans sometimes become overly habituated, approaching fishermen for handouts.

Pelicans look for their prey from the air and then dive into the water to capture it in their expandable pouch. The water is drained from the pouch and then food is swallowed. Pelicans feed on menhaden, mullet, sardines, pinfish, herring, ...

Their diet is mostly fish, including menhaden, eels, other sharks, skates, squid, and also crustaceans. Females are mature at 16 years and give birth to 8-12 live young after a gestation period of 9-12 months. Pups are about 8.

In fact, they will even perch on the pelican's head and wait for just the right moment to grab a fish! The brown pelican eats menhaden. herring, mullet, sheepshead, silversides and other fish. It also eats crustaceans.
