I have had the good fortune to watch merlins in December. The first time was high water at Breydon. Suddenly hundreds of lapwing, redshank and dunlin all took wing, rapidly climbing high above the flooded flats.

Merlin (Falco columbarius)
The Merlin is distributed almost entirely in the northern hemisphere where it breeds in the higher latitudes and migrates in the lower latitudes during the winter. It is found in a wide variety of habitats.

Status Rare in summer, fairly common transient, uncommon in winter. Breeds. Most frequently seen in September and October, especially along the coast and on our southernmost islands.

Merlins often use old crows' nests. The female lays four or five spotted eggs. The female (and sometimes the male) incubates the eggs until they hatch after 25 to 32 days. Young fledge (learn to fly) 30 to 35 days after hatching.

Merlins favor open country, preferring grasslands, seashores, sand dunes, marshlands, steppes, and deserts. Merlins rarely live in forested areas throughout much of their range, but frequently breed in coniferous forests of the Northern Hemisphere.

Merlin Falco columbarius. Fairly common to uncommon in fall, rare in winter, and uncommon to rare in spring in Gulf Coast region. In other regions, rare in winter and fall, and rare to occasional in spring and early summer.

Merlin is my White-eyed conure and I rescued her 2 years ago. At first she was petrified of everything and would bite VERY hard. Now she says Ello Merlin and Ello. These conures are listed CITES II in our country so there very rare here.

Here at Asia Trail, Merlin and Hana will hopefully be starting the next chapter for sloth bears at the Zoo. Hana recently started showing interest in Merlin again, and they have been spending time together during the day.

(60-cm) gyrfalcon, and in habits from the swift merlin to the sluggish caracara. True falcons, distinguished by their notched beaks, are widely distributed.

In the Southeast, the two species most similar to the Peregrine Falcon are the American Kestrel and the Merlin. The American Kestrel is much smaller than the Peregrine Falcon (27 cm (10.5 in) in length) and has a rusty-colored back and tail.

Other falcons include the Gyrfalcon, Lanner Falcon, and the Merlin. Some small insectivorous falcons with long, narrow wings are called hobbies, and some which hover as they hunt for small rodents are named kestrels.

Other members of this family include the less common Merlin (aka Pigeon Hawk) and the endangered Peregrine Falcon (aka Duck Hawk). Both are found statewide, more often along the coasts. Neither breed in Florida.

Rough-legged hawks and merlins abandon their northern homes in winter. In contrast, some animals cannot endure the heat of summer, and they escape by migrating a handful of miles out of a valley and up into the mountains.

In both Celtic and Native traditions, Hawk is known as the messenger. In the Arthurian tradition, the Merlin (a kind of hawk) was the head Druid and respected as the Messenger of the Gods.

The commonest and smallest American falcon is the sparrow hawk (related to the European kestrel). Others are the pigeon hawk (related to the European merlin ) . Falcons , like cliff edges or in the abandoned nests of hawks and crows .

It is a member of the Falconid family, which also includes the American kestrel, merlin, prairie falcon and gyrfalcon.

Prairie Falcon paler and more brown, has dark "armpits."
American Kestrel much smaller and has a double facial stripe.
Merlin smaller and slimmer, and has only a very weak facial stripe.
