Midland Painted Turtle C. p. marginata was described by Agassiz in 1857. This species is just slightly smaller than the Eastern Painted Turtle, reaching about 5.75 " (14.6 cm).
Midland painted turtles are among the most abundant and certainly the most conspicuous turtles in Ohio. They are particularly fond of basking and can be seen by the dozens on logs and along the banks of most bodies of water through the summer.

It is probably the most abundant turtle in the state, persisting in heavily urbanized landscapes and severely degraded wetlands. There are two subspecies, the Western Painted Turtle, Chrysemys picta bellii, and the Midland Painted Turtle, C. p.
and Mobile Bay drainages except portions of Black Warrior and Cahaba Rivers. Includes three intergrading subspecies, C. p. picta (eastern painted turtle), C. p. dorsalis (southern painted turtle), and C. p. marginata (midland painted turtle).
