The Midwest Worm Snake is a very small, glossy brown-to-black snake that resembles an earthworm. Also, the belly of this snake is bright pink to reddish-pink. The tail is short and it tapers to a sharp tip.

More recently Midwest Worm Snakes (Carphophis a. helenae) have also been found in WV counties bordering the Ohio River.
Known from most regions except portions of Coastal Plain, Piedmont, and Ridge and Valley. A secretive small woodland snake of mesic deciduous forest. Includes subspecies C. a. amoenus (Eastern worm snake) and C. a. helenae (midwest worm snake).
